Garden
The garden is a structure that allows the player to grow certain plants and mushroom. It was added in update v0.01 of The Forest.
Contents
Gameplay [ ]
While building the player can freely choose how large the garden should be. Very large gardens require an equally large flat surface, of which there are not too many to be found on the peninsula.
Building on a custom foundation or custom floor can make it easier to build a larger garden, though this will cost many more logs.
To begin, the player must collect seeds first, which are obtained by collecting blueberries, aloe, and coneflowers. The seed type can be switched with «R» and planted with «C».
A garden can be used endlessly, but blueberry bushes must be cut first or they’ll block the spot they’re on. Since the empty bushes don’t wither away they could also be used as decoration.
Larger gardens can also grow more plants at once, but planting too much should be avoided, since the fully grown plants wither away after a certain amount of time.
Building [ ]
Growing Blueberries [ ]
- When collecting blueberries, there is a chance that the player will also get blueberry seeds. This includes blueberries collected from bushes grown in gardens.
- Blueberries can only be planted in gardens. They will not fit in the wall planter.
- The inventory can hold 30 blueberries at once. They do not spoil.
- The inventory can hold 30 blueberry seeds at once.
Blueberry growing process measured in game days:
Day 0 — Seed planted in the ground, appearing as a little dirt mound. All plants look like this when first planted.
Growing Aloe Vera [ ]
- The inventory can hold 10 aloe at once.
- The inventory can hold 30 aloe seeds at once.
- Growing Aloe is a great way to make herbal medicine, herbal medicine+, and energy mix+. The inventory can hold 5 of each type. Making a maximum of all three will costs 15 aloe.
- Aloe is currently the only way to heal infection and food poisoning, making aloe one of the most sought after items in the game.
- Aloe seeds can be planted in the wall planter along with coneflower seeds.
Growing Coneflower [ ]
- The inventory can hold an unlimited amount of coneflower seeds.
- Growing coneflowers is a great way to make energy mix and energy mix+. The inventory can carry 5 of each type. This will cost 10 coneflower to make a max of both.
- Coneflower is quite common in the game, it is probably the least beneficial plant to place in a garden though it still has large benefits.
- Coneflower seeds can be planted in the Wall planter along with Aloe seeds.
- Coneflower grows rather quickly
Growing Mushrooms [ ]
It is possible to grow all types of mushrooms, which include:
Amanita Mushroom
Chanterelle Mushroom
Deer Mushroom
Jack Mushroom
Liberty Cap Mushroom
Puff Mushroom
To grow mushrooms, the garden must be built within the cave system. Mushrooms don’t work the same as other plants when growing. Instead of yielding more mushrooms that are planted, they duplicate next to each other. If you fill the garden with mushrooms, they won’t be able to duplicate. Ensure there is space free for the mushrooms to grow.
To build a garden inside a cave, you will need to bring logs into the cave. This can be done by simple holding the logs, and walking inside the cave while holding them. This does not work for drop down caves.

Gardens created in caves now have the option to plant mushrooms instead of seeds.
New building: Custom garden ! Replaces the legacy garden, amount of available grow spots based on its size. Ground with slope/holes will prevent from placing it really big
It is no longer possible to grow plants in garden while in caves
Clamped garden plants scale to prevent it from ever going into negative
Fixed soil in gardens not casting shadows and darkened dirt piles to make them easier to see
Now saving which garden blueberry have already been used so that gardens no longer respawn at full yield after loading a saved game if previously consumed
The player can now pick which seed type to plant in garden and wall plant pot !
New item: Blueberry bush seed (can be planted in garden)
New item: Coneflower seed (can be planted in garden and wall plant pot)
Fixed issue with garden preventing to load properly from a save if it had planted seeds
(audio) Added garden digging sound

Tree
Trees are an important resource in the game, as they provide essential materials such as logs or sticks. Trees come in a variety of sizes: large and medium-sized trees yield logs and tree sap, while small trees and saplings provide sticks and leaves.
Large trees are a slow-growing (or no-growing) resource in The Forest. Therefore, careful resource management is important to ensure adequate building materials are available in different areas of the Peninsula. Trees will respawn by default by 10% of their total number each time you sleep, but Regrowing Trees can be turned off in the Settings menu under the Gameplay section. Trees will not respawn, regardless of settings, if you remove the stump after you chop down the tree.
Sticks only spawn around standing trees, so it’s worth noting that if «Regrowing Trees» is turned off, cutting down a tree will not only remove the tree itself, but also the stick spawn around it. In areas without small trees or saplings to provide sticks, it may be worth keeping a small patch of trees alive.
Cannibals will react negatively if they see you chopping down trees or possibly even if they see the stumps. It’s also possible that cannibals react more aggressively towards wooden structures than stone ones, though this is unconfirmed.

Tree varieties [ ]
There are many different species of trees in The Forest. They can mostly be broken down to two main categories based on use and gameplay interactions—log trees and stick trees.
Log trees [ ]
Log trees are relatively thick in their trunks and branches.
These very tall trees:
- Provide logs and sap
- Do not regrow after save and exit
- Can regrow with tree-regrowing mode on
- Can damage/destroy creatures, structures, and players when falling
- Leave tree stumps behind
- Spawn sticks regularly until cut down
- Have collision (i.e., cannot be passed through)
- Can only be cut down with certain tools
- Cutting down may provoke cannibals
Stick trees [ ]
Stick trees are saplings usually less than a few meters tall.
These types of trees:
Known bugs [ ]
- Sometimes, when chopping down a tree, it falls on the ground at a 45 degree angle or less (from vertical e.g. stays near upright). In this state, the tree will continuously fall with the motion blur and effects playing infinitely .
- Sometimes, when chopping down trees, they will not fall over, but instead stay upright as the sound effect of a tree falling continues to play. The logs will appear in the air exactly where the tree is.
- Sometimes, after leaving and reentering a multiplayer save, trees stumps may appear as regular trees for one or more players. These trees cannot be cut down however woodchips can be seen flying from the tree. The player(s) who cannot see the tree will also see the woodchips and cutting animation of the player attempting to cut down the tree.
Trees names mentioned in patch notes [ ]
- Small coniferous tree
- Maple trees
- Winter trees
- Moss trees
- Pine trees
- Pine tree top heavy
- Fig trees
- Winter top heavy trees
- Mid level trees
Tree cutting [ ]
The direction that large trees fall after being cut down can be directed to some extent by walking or jumping into them. Using this method, as well as taking advantage of slopes, you can make it easier to transport logs to your base as they are affected by physics. Care should be taken, however, as trees that yield logs may crush any structure they fall on (incomplete buildings and trees that yield sticks will not be affected) or may even kill a player.
The player’s strength doesn’t affect number of swings required to cut down a tree. Weapons/tools and the respective number of swings required to cut down a tree are:
Weapon | Pine Tree | Maple Tree |
---|---|---|
Plane Axe | 17 | 9 |
Crafted Axe | 13 | 9 |
Rusty Axe | 13 | 9 |
Modern Axe | 9 | 5 |
Machete | 33 | 17 |
