Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘PA300’

Nafray is a grass native to Australia and shouldn’t be confused with the South African variety called Foxtail Grass (Pennisetum setaceum), which is a declared a noxious weed in NSW. Although Nafray has a viable seed, it isn’t classed as invasive. Saying this, we have had some customers in Queensland, Northern NSW, and Newcastle inform us that they have had Nafray self-seed in their garden. With the advent of climate change, this could begin to occur in more southern climates as well. We mention this not to scare gardeners but to make you aware that there have been known instances of self-seeding. One way to prevent this is to cut the flower heads off before setting seeds in late autumn.

Best in moist garden soils or an irrigated garden during dry months of summer

Trim back the foliage by half at the end of winter and when all frost have gone.
