Petalburg Woods

Petalburg Woods is a Hoenn forest that splits Route 104 into two halves. Going north, the path appears to zig-zag, but going south, there are ledges that allow reaching the other end quickly. The forest is notable for its gatherable mushrooms, which result in a quick gain of money.

An eastern part is blocked off by Cut trees. In that area is located the entrance to Petalburg Maze, the Hoenn equivalent of the Viridian Maze, although it will be of little interest to beginners in the region.

Notable miscellanies

Maqua encounter

A Magma grunt will be blocking the path just like in the original games, which must be fought in order to pass. However, upon defeating her, she will call a reinforcement, and next will be an Aqua grunt that must be fought, revealing cooperation between the two groups.

After defeating both of them, the scientist will reward the player with a Great Ball and leave.

Mushrooms

Scattered around the forest are a total of 8 mushrooms that can be harvested. These look like normal mushrooms, with the difference that they cannot be stepped on. Each mushroom will reward the player with a random amount of between 1 and 6 Tiny Mushrooms, making it an excellent location for a quick gain of money.

Each mushroom will have a Cooldown of 14 days. However, if the player has a Paras or a Parasect and chooses to harvest the mushrooms using them, will boost the amount you get next time.

Gunk Shot Tutor

A Move Tutor for the move Gunk Shot is located directly east of the northern exit, beyond the Cut trees. He will teach the move to any compatible Pokémon for the price of 9,000.

Petalburg Maze

Just like the Viridian Forest, Petalburg Forest also has its own maze. Its entrance is on the eastern side, which will require Cut to reach. The maze itself being in the dark, bringing Flash is also recommended.

The maze is however of very little interest for a beginner in the Hoenn region; its rewards include EV-reducing berries and one of the possible locations of Latios.

Cut is a Normal type damage-dealing move.

It is also known as HM01, the corresponding HM device of this move, which is obtained from the S.S. Anne quest.

Contents

Functionality

In battle

Cut inflicts damage and has no secondary effect.

Out of battle

Cut can be used to cut specific trees, removing them from the way. The usage of this move outside of combat does not require the Pokémon knowing the move to have Happiness. Most Cut trees are either blocking an item or can be cut down to open a shortcut. However, there are a few story-mandatory locations that are isolated by a Cut tree. Hoenn is the only region that does not require the player to use Cut.

The Tree Axe functions identically to Cut and can be used simply from having the item in the player’s bagpack, removing the need to carry a Pokémon knowing Cut. However, the player is still required to own HM01 as well as the region’s required badge to use the Tree Axe.

In order to use either Cut or the Tree Axe, the player is required to have the following badge depending on his or her current region:

  • Kanto: Cascade Badge (Cerulean City)
  • Johto: Hive Badge (Azalea Town)
  • Hoenn: Stone Badge (Rustboro City)
  • Sinnoh: Coal Badge (Oreburgh City)

Learnset

HMs

Cut can be taught by using HM01, which is obtained at the end of the story-mandatory quest at S.S. Anne. Being an HM, it can be used as many times as the player wants.

Emboldened Pokémon avail from a STAB bonus for this move.

Headbutt trees

Headbutt trees are specially interactable trees that can be encountered with the out-of-battle usage of the move Headbutt.

They are inhabited predominantly by bird-, bug-, and monkey-resembling Pokémon, thereby serving as another acquisitional avenue for various Pokémon that may be unavailable or rare elsewhere. In addition to spawnsets, they potentially yield EV-reductive berries, as it is one of the most prolific hotbeds of obtaining them in PRO at this time given the relative paucity of berry-tree allotments around the regions.

They are plentifully available on most Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh exterior maps (with a smattering added in Hoenn, currently), and they are identifiable with the overhovering sleeping-face animation; this is also indicative as to whether or not the tree itself is encounterable or not, since the animation will be invisible after the tree has already been depleted.

Contents

Usage

If a tree is overlaid by a sleeping-face animation, it is actively headbuttable to those who satisfy all the conditional requirements.

In addition to the first badge in the region’s successional line and a Headbutt-toting Pokémon, the operative Pokémon must have attained at least 150 happiness points; until then, it will be disobedient when ordering it to headbutt trees.

Each individual tree can only be encountered before it depletes, and most of them will cool down after one real-world day has elapsed; the only exceptions are Trainers Valley’s trees, which cool down every 6 hours.

Encounterable Pokémon

Structure

Most Headbutt trees comprise of five Pokémon and are mostly uniformized for the rarity-tier scale: two common Pokémon, two intermediate-tier Pokémon, and one rare Pokémon. Occasionally, a Membership-exclusive spawn is available; in all of these instances, it will be a rare-tier spawn as an alternative eventuality to the standard rare.

Spawnsets are identical for each Headbutt tree that is available on the map.

All Pokémon spawns are monophasic and thus will spawn at any time of the day.

Honey Tree

Honey Trees are special golden trees that can spawn rare Pokémon by slathering them with Honey. Interacting with these trees will prompt you to slather Honey on it, doing so will spawn a Pokémon.

Honey Trees are separated into 4 types: Bug, Ghost, Grass, and Normal. Slathering Honey on the trees of the same type is known as «chaining». Chaining will result in a rare Pokémon spawning, this is the main purpose of doing the Honey Trees.
